How long does it take to heal from oral surgery?
Healing time varies by procedure. Tooth extractions often feel better in 5–7 days. More complex surgeries, like bone grafts, can take 4–8 weeks for full recovery. Most patients see noticeable improvement after the first few days to a week, and full healing within one to two months.
How will I know if I need oral surgery?
While the best way is to have an oral exam at your dentist’s office, some common ways to tell if you need oral surgery are: Impacted wisdom teeth that cause pain or swelling, missing teeth and bone loss that need implants, severe gingivitis.
When/what can I eat after oral surgery?
What you can eat varies from surgery to surgery. That said, here are some general tips to keep in mind: For the first 24 hours, stick to cool or room-temperature liquids and very soft foods, like yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies. Over the next 3–5 days, you can add soft solids such as mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and oatmeal. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods until your surgeon says it’s safe, usually around one to two weeks post-surgery.
